Abbath is one of the defining figures of Norwegian black metal, best known as the co-founder and longtime frontman of Immortal before launching his own band, Abbath, in 2015. Recognized for his instantly identifiable stage presence, frostbitten riffing style, and mix of black metal aggression with classic heavy metal groove, he helped shape the sound and visual identity of second-wave black metal through landmark albums such as Pure Holocaust, At the Heart of Winter, and Sons of Northern Darkness.
With Abbath, he continued evolving that signature formula into a more riff-driven and accessible form of blackened heavy metal, balancing icy atmosphere with memorable hooks and rock ’n’ roll swagger. Across multiple decades, Abbath has remained one of extreme metal’s most charismatic and influential personalities, bridging raw Norwegian black metal tradition with timeless heavy metal instinct.
